TRAINEE LICENCE

ADIT offers PDIs the opportunity to work under a trainee licence in order to gain full qualification as an ADI. Trainee Licence enquiries.

Trainee Driving Instructor Licence

About the Trainee Licence

Before a potential driving instructor (PDI) can start teaching pupils, they must first apply and pay for a trainee licence from the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

A trainee licence enables a potential driving instructor (PDI) to:

  • gain experience of instructing real pupils
  • prepare for the ADI Part 3 Test
  • get paid for giving instruction

A trainee licence is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. In some cases it's possible to reapply for a second trainee licence, although in order to receive it, the PDI will need to provide a good reason why they require it.

Applying for a licence

To be eligble for a licence, potential driving instructors must:

  • have passed the ADI part 1 test in the last 2 years
  • pass the ADI Part 2 test
  • be sponsored by a professional driving school with a qualified ADI (school details are displayed on the licence)
  • have done at least 40 hours training (10 hours must be in-car) with a qualified ADI in the past 6 months, and recorded it on the ADI 21T declaration form

Licence conditions - 2 options

Once the potential driving instructor satisfies the requirements above, they have the choice of 2 training options:

Option 1:

  • an Approved Driving Instructor will supervise the trainee for a minimum of 20 percent of all lessons given
  • a record of all lessons taken and all supervision undertaken must be shown on the form ADI 21S (Licenced Trainee Supervision Record). The form must be signed by the trainee and supervising ADI and returned to the DVSA when the trainee licence expires

Option 2:

  • at least 20 hours additional training must be taken covering all the topics specified
  • training must be taken within 3 months of receiving the licence, or before the first attempt at ADI Part 3
  • at least 25 percent of the training must in-car on a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 basis the sponsoring ADI trainer
  • a record of the training must be kept on form ADI 21AT (Instructor Training Declaration) and sent to the DVSA within 3 months, or given to the examiner on the first attempt at ADI Part 3 test

Using the licence

During the 6 months when the trainee licence is valid, a potential driving instructor (PDI) is allowed to give lessons to paying pupils through the sponsoring driving school.

The PDI must display the pink trainee licence in their car whilst giving lessons, and must not advertise themselves as fully qualified or as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
