BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

You can become a driving instructor and enjoy the benefit of becoming your very own boss. However, there are different options available to you. Let us help you through understanding what's on offer.

You can choose to be independent (on your own) after qualifying, or join a franchise in your area. Either way, you're still your own boss.

Driving Instructor Training Process

Becoming a fully qualified driving instructor isn’t an easy process. However, as long as you're prepared to work hard and you find the right trainer for you – you will have great chance of passing.

There are 3 exams you need to take and pass each one within 3 attempts. You also have 2 years to complete all 3 exams from the date you pass the first exam – Part 1.

You can pass all 3 exams in as little as 3 months. Typically trainees take between 6 months – 12 months if they have an existing job and they are doing their training in between.

  • ADI Part 1 - Theory
  • ADI Part 2 - Ability to drive
  • ADI Part 3 - Ability to teach

Requirements to become a driving instructor

There are a few minimum requirements to become a driving instructor. All applicants should have the following:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Hold a current UK manual licence for at least 3 years. By the time you qualify you should have at least 4 years experience before entering the ADI register
  • You should not have been disqualified from driving in the last four years before joining the ADI register
  • You should have no more than 6 points on your driving licence
  • Be a 'fit and healthy' to enter the ADI register. This is quite vague, so if you're unsure you can ask at the applying stage
  • You should pass a criminal reference check 'DBS'
  • You will also have to complete a DBS every 4 years to remain on the ADI register

Training Courses to Become a Driving Instructor

Many national companies charge in the region of £2000-£3000 with no guarantee you will pass.

At ADIT DRIVING SCHOOL we offer various packages depending on what level your coming to us at. We take on beginners with no experience to someone who has failed their part 3 adi exam twice with another company.
